Optical fibre in Spain is better than in the rest of Europea

Although for many it is “”crazy”” to think so, Spain today has one of the best fibre optic connections in Europe. Spaniards should be proud that they are world leaders in the field of telecommunications, as fibre optics is one of the best high-speed Internet connection technologies available.

Just by taking a look at the large deployment that the State and many companies that sell fibre optic service throughout the country, it is possible to realise the great infrastructure that has been developed in Spain. We must make it clear that the government’s goal is that Spaniards (at least 85%) have a good internet connection. This undoubtedly brings many benefits, such as teleworking

MAKE NO MISTAKE: IT’S ABOUT QUALITY AND QUANTITY.

It is not just a fibre optic connection that reaches many Spaniards. It is also about quality high-speed Internet connections, i.e. stable connections that fulfil their purpose of providing high speeds in sending and receiving data. It is also important to note that there are several types of fibre optics, and Spain has chosen to install the one that offers the best speed and quality to its users, making it a country that is well ahead in Europe in this area.

We can say that the quality of fibre optics depends on how it reaches the Spanish people’s homes. There are three types of fibre: FTTH, which is the one that reaches homes directly and has no packet losses, since there are no alterations or mixtures with other technologies. Then, there is FTTB, which is the optical fibre that reaches a telephone-type central office in buildings and other technologies are used to bring the connection to people’s homes. Finally, there is FTTC, in which fibre reaches large blocks of houses and is distributed up to 500 metres with other types of technology, resulting in large amounts of data loss.

Spain is a pioneer in fibre optics because it has become accustomed to installing mostly FTTH fibre, which goes directly to the homes of the people who contract the service, thus providing a great Internet connection experience. Of course, the other types of fibre have also been installed in the country, but this is the most used so far, therefore, Spain is among the best countries in Europe in terms of connection with this technology.

THE USE OF FTTH

Spain comes out on top for massively using this type of installation, as it is the most widely deployed throughout the country, making it the nation in Europe with the best internet connection using fibre optics. In many neighbouring countries they are not using this type of fibre, rather they are mostly using lossy fibre (FTTB and even FTTC), as it is combined with other communication technologies. In terms of figures, in Spain there are more than 17 million homes with low-loss fibre, i.e. FTTH. Even more than France, Italy, Germany or the UK itself. In terms of percentages, Spain uses up to 44% FTTH, one of the best percentages in Europe, this is undoubtedly a milestone that Spaniards have to celebrate.
