KeyQuick® MECHANICAL JOINTING SYSTEM
ALLOWS YOU TO CHECK THE INNER WORKINGS OF THE FIBER OPTICS
A GREAT ADVANTAGE IN THE FIELD FOR CHECKING THE CONNECTION AND CORRECTING LEAKS
KeyQuick® MECHANICAL JOINTING SYSTEM
Light “travels” from one fiber to another without attenuation. A material is said to be transparent when it allows light to pass through easily. Transparency is an optical property of matter, which has varying degrees and properties. The word “transparency” has two related meanings and the use of both is intended to guide our design of KeyQuick® technology.
First of all, transparent can mean “see through”, i.e. we can see the inner workings. We can look at the “guts” of the device, we can see how the fiber “works” inside each device.
HOW DOES THE DEVICE OPERATE?
Enough to diagnose problems and anticipate behavior.
If we connect our devices to a laser light source before the connection is made, we will observe that there is light inside the device. If we make the connection, the light disappears, the light “”travels”” from one fiber to another without attenuation. If, once the connection has been made, the device is still illuminated, this means that the connection was not 100% successful.
However, the technician can always unblock the fibers and make a new connection, until there is no light inside the device, making sure that all connections are perfect, no light, no attenuation.
WHAT ARE THE ADVANTAGES?
AVOIDS LOSSES SUCH AS A MERGER
Two relevant optical parameters are insertion loss (how much light is lost as it passes through the splice) and return loss (how much light is reflected at the splice transition). Most of the cheaper mechanical splices and field mount connectors have high losses, unacceptable for an FTTH deployment. The insertion and return loss of a KeyQuick® splice is comparable to the losses realized by a fusion splicer. We are talking about an actual tested average of 0.02-0.04dB insertion and -63dB return.
INVESTMENT FOR YOUR BUSINESS
The speed of installation coupled with the low investment in tooling are two other major advantages. This makes it feasible to equip many teams of service installers much more economically, which will allow for a much faster deployment and therefore an incredibly higher return on investment. One financial reason, efficiency = profitability.
THE IMPORTANCE OF IMG QUALITY
WE OFFER YOU A PERMANENT SOLUTION
The IMG acts as a “light bridge” on splices and mechanical connectors, allowing for the perfect connection of fibers. This technology has been widely adopted within the Telecommunications industry and we can prove that our KeyQuick® system has a solid proven track record of customer savings, flexible installation and permanent stability.
Repeated studies of KeyQuick® mechanical splicing mechanisms demonstrate that the technology is resilient in outdoor conditions and offers long-term “permanent results”.
KeyFibre’s high precision mechanical splices and connectors have had a successful and proven track record in the industry and represent the best solution for telecommunications service operators in the last mile infrastructure. Our KeyQuick® system is totally reliable and secure.
A BRIDGE OF LIGHT
IMGs can be produced with different specifications for refractive index. In the case of KeyQuick® technology for FTTH applications, the IMG is synthesized to obtain an IR that matches the heart of the fiber. The IMG matches optical fibers within the splicing mechanism and eliminates signal losses caused by reflection or refraction of light due to any space between the fibers. By matching the refractive index of the fibers, the gel creates a light bridge, effectively carrying light from one fiber to the other without significant signal insertion loss.
MECHANICAL JOINTING
WITH KeyQuick® TECHNOLOGY
Mechanical splices designed with KeyQuick® technology represent a simple technique that requires little training and can be implemented with low-cost tools to reduce the difficulty of use in hard-to-reach or otherwise restricted areas. KeyQuick® technology offers safety, speed and efficiency, both in terms of work and results.
WE OFFER YOU A
PERMANENT SOLUTION
Oil separation, a measure used to identify fluid loss tendency, shows that the current IMG being used in KeyQuick® technology performs on average 13 times better than low-cost connector and fitting formulations. The IMG used in KeyQuick® connectors and splices is specifically designed to overcome the problems caused by evaporation and oil separation in early generations of gels.

A BIT OF HISTORY
In the late 1970s, telecommunications companies began building new fiber optic-based infrastructure. In 1988, the first transatlantic fiber cable was activated. In this initial stage, the first generation of IMGs was used in some mechanical splicing techniques. Actual experience with that first generation of IMGs revealed problems with the original chemical composition. It was observed that the optical properties leading to yellowing, oil separation and crystallization and hardening of the gel needed to be analyzed and improved. The original gel formulations showed susceptibilities to water, which allowed moisture intrusion and affected the attenuation signal. The new generation IMG used in KeyQuick® technology is specifically synthesized under precise laboratory conditions. Slight variations in the formulation of the IMG or in the IMG process can affect variations in the result obtained. In summary, the first generation of IMG used by different brands of connectors and mechanical joints was not processed under the same strict manufacturing controls, including the class 10,000 clean zone packaging, that IMG is subjected to in the current process.
The following table shows the changes between the low-cost mechanical connector and splice formulations and those used in the KeyQuick® technology
